Bilingual Homeschooling

by Alecia Rolling

Lately, there has been more and more interest in bilingual homeschooling. Naturally, mothers have many questions and many reservations about attempting to create a bilingual home, especially if the mother herself is not bilingual.

A book that I found very helpful four years ago was "Raising a Bilingual Child" by Barbara Pearson. It is a well-organized presentation of research done in recent years on bilingual and mutlilingual children and families. Across the board, when monolingual and bi-/multilingual children were compared on standardized tests, the bi-and multilingual children performed better. What wonderful encouragement to the homeschooling mother!

This book also contains case studies of families with different backgrounds to illustrate different ways that could work for you. These are what I found especially helpful!
