Latin Composition Summer Course:

(7th-12th grade): July 5 - July 28, 2011. One-hour class every Tuesday and Thursday evening 7pm ET (8 classes) 
Instructor: Alecia Rolling. This course is open to Latin I and Latin II students of all ages who wish to work on Latin composition. This is a writing intensive course that will require each student to compose approximately 50 words of Latin per week.  Students will write several short compositions about their activities, interests, and ideas. These compositions will be graded by the instructor before the next class so as to allow plenty of time for improvement as the course progresses. Latin Translation Summer Course: The Georgics 

(7th-12th grade): July 5-July 29, 2011. One-hour class every Wednesday and Friday evening at 7pm ET (8 classes). 
Instructor: Alecia Rolling. This course is open to students who have completed at least one year of intensive Latin or two years of Latin. This is a translation intensive course that will require each student to translate approximately 100 lines of Latin per week. Since Mr. Rolling will be teaching an ancient history cycle for Middle School and High School students this year, we will be translating Vergil's Georgics, Book I. The instructor will grade translations before the next class period so as to allow plenty of time for improvement as the weeks roll by.  Grammar will be dicussed as needed to improve translating skills. German Summer Course: Schneeweiβchen und Rosenrot 

(7th-12th grade): July 11 - July 28, 2011. 30-minute class every day Monday-Thursday in the evening 8:30-9:00 pm ET (8 classes) 
Instructor: Alecia Rolling. This course is open to students who have completed at least one year of German language study and is designed to help students iron out the wrinkles left over from German I before entering German II. We will spend two weeks, translating Grimm's Schneeweiβchen und Rosenrot, and students will compose a fairytale of their own. Assignments will be graded before class so as to allow time for improvement as the weeks roll by. Grammar will be discussed in class as needed to help translations and compositions. SAT PREP Sessions: 

July 5 - August 25, 2011. One-hour class every Friday at 8 pm ET (8 classes).
Instructor: Kenneth Rolling. Students will meet with the instructor once a week to go over practice exams and questions for the SAT. During the days outside of class, students are expected to work diligently to understand test problems from The Official SAT Study Guide, which can be bought from a bookstore, borrowed from a friend, or checked out from your local library.

Summer Parent-Student Reading Group: Sophie's World 

July 25-August 11, 2011. Discussion class every Monday and Thursday 8:30-10:00 pm ET (6 classes).
Instructor: Kenneth Rolling. Students and their parents will meet with the instructor every Monday and Thursday to discuss the book Sophie's World: a Novel about the History of Philosophy by Jostein Gaarder. In between group meetings, parents and students will have a set of study questions to answer as they read. This will help fuel parent-student conversation about the book as well as make discussion meetings more fruitful.

(Recorded Course) The Romans: A Day in the Life (Spring 2011)
Online Course by Mr. Kenneth Rolling via Homeschool Connections!
Overview: This course provides a narrative history of the Romans from their modest beginnings through their rise and, finally, to their fall. The focus will be on providing as multifaceted an understanding of Roman life at all levels of society as is possible as we follow the narrative of the Roman people; hence, the writings, foods, games, and ideas of the Romans may all find their places in the course.
Assignments: Readings will contain both a base narrative history. Supplementary readings from a variety of sources may appear as well. Each week’s assignment will include readings, a Latin phrase for memorization, work upon a timeline, and an online quiz (covering the reading, lecture, and memorization for the week). There will be three 2-4 page essay assignments. There will be midterm and final tests. The semester project will be a timeline of the history of Rome.


(Recorded Course) Myth in Drama (Spring 2011)

Overview: Orally transmitted myths were intimately involved in the advent of early drama in Greece. Since then myths have played a perennial role in the dramatic art of Western Civilization. This course examines what myth is and how it has been used in different times and places throughout history to create a common culture in the West.
Assignments: Each week’s assignment will include readings, a dramatic line for memorization, and an online quiz (covering the reading, lecture, and memorization for the week). There will be three 2-4 page essay assignments. There will be midterm and final tests (study guidelines will be provided). The semester projects will be to write a short drama and to complete a timeline.


(Recorded Course) What is Beauty? (Fall 2010)
An online philosophy course offered by Mr. Kenneth Rolling via Homeschool Connections. This course will provide a survey of various authors’ attempts to answer the questions, “What is beauty?” and, “What is the meaning of the beautiful?” Plato, Aristotle, St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Bonaventure will be read and considered, among others.

(Recorded Course) The Greeks: The Fathers of Enquiry (Fall 2010)
Online Course by Mr. Kenneth Rolling via Homeschool Connections! The Greeks provide us with many of the known firsts of Western Civilization: mathematicians, astronomers, poets, philosophers, statesmen, and historians. This course provides a thematic history of the cultures of what is today Greece from earliest times up until the rise of Rome with particular focus on just such intellectual and artistic achievers among these fascinating peoples. The idea of enquiry will be the backbone concept of the course: the Greeks provide examples of how to begin to ask questions about things we all see and do every day that lead directly to many modern sciences and arts. A brief introduction to the Greek alphabet and language will be included.

The course will focus on the student’s ability to compose Latin, allowing for a greater mastery of the language than what is often found with other approaches that focus on translation. Each class will consist of rigorous grammar drills, a quiz, some history, new grammar presentations, and practice. At the end of the year, the student should be able at the very least to compose a short, simple story using the present and future tenses. This will be tested with a final exam.

The course will focus on the student’s ability to compose Latin, allowing for a greater mastery of the language than what is often found with other approaches that focus on translation. Each class will consist of rigorous grammar drills, a quiz, some history, new grammar presentations, and practice. At the end of the year, the student should be able at the very least to compose a short story, history, or poem using all the active and passive verb tenses. This will be tested with a final exam.

(Recorded Course) Latin III (Fall and Spring 2010-2011)by Mrs. Alecia Rolling via Homeschool Connections! This course will cover a year’s worth of Latin in two parts, Fall and Spring. The course will focus on the student’s ability to compose Latin, allowing for a greater mastery of the language than what is often found with other approaches that focus on translation. Each class will consist of rigorous grammar drills, a quiz, some history, new grammar presentations, and much in-class translation and composition. At the end of the year, the student should be able to move freely between Latin and English, e.g. the student should be able to sit down and pick up a Latin text and read it, understanding the basic meaning of the text without looking up words in a dictionary. This will be tested with a final exam.

(Recorded Course) German I
by Mrs. Alecia Rolling via Homeschool Connections! This course will cover a year’s worth of German in two parts, Fall and Spring. We will use a child’s approach of learning the language through music, story-telling, and poetry. Each class will consist of vigorous grammar drills, a quiz, cultural activities, and story-telling. At the end of the year, the student should be able to carry out short conversations in German and write short, simple stories. This will be tested with a final exam. Note: The instructor plans to offer second year German during the 2011/2012 school year.
