Many people have asked us lately what we would recommend as a homeschool plan for teaching Latin, so we are providing our current recommendation below (subject to change as we become aware of new materials). Of course as Roman Catholics, Latin holds a special place in our hearts and in our customs, so we wish our children to learn Latin and to experience the living language within the Church.- Pre-K-1st Grade: Memorization of Church Prayers in Latin. Easy for the whole family! Try ordering Praying with the Universal Church to get started!
- 2nd Grade: English from the Roots Up
- 3rd Grade: Prima Latina by Leigh Lowe
- 4th Grade: Latina Christiana I by Cheryl Lowe
- 5th Grade: Latina Christiana II by Cheryl Lowe; these series of books for designed for the elementary years, and work very well if the parent is excited!
- 6th Grade: Lingua Angelica by Cheryl Lowe and Let's Read Latin by Ralph McInerny
- 7th-8th Grade: Latin for Beginners by Benjamin D'Ooge offers a mature review and introductions to more complex grammar. It is also FREE.
- 9th-10th Grade: online or local translation and composition courses/tutoring
Do you know Getting Started with Latin? That is my favorite book for grades 5 and 6. I also like the Latin picture books and CD I am Reading Latin for grades 2-3.
ReplyDeleteRecently we've been having fun with the books by Orberg (Lingua Latina).
